Health and Safety Policy for Removals Elephant and Castle
Removals Elephant and Castle is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for employees, contractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our removals activities. This Health and Safety policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with household and commercial moves, packing, loading, transportation and unloading of goods.
Our Commitment to Health and Safety
We recognise that professional removals work involves manual handling, vehicle operations and working in a variety of premises, all of which present potential hazards. Our aim is to prevent accidents, injuries and ill health by identifying and controlling these risks as far as is reasonably practicable.
Management will provide appropriate resources, training and supervision to ensure that health and safety is an integral part of planning and delivering every move. Safe working practices must never be compromised for speed or convenience.
Legal Duties and Responsibilities
Removals Elephant and Castle will comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and industry guidance applicable to removals and transport services. We will keep this policy under review to reflect any changes in legal requirements or best practice.
Every employee and contractor working with us has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. All staff are expected to follow safe systems of work, use the equipment provided correctly and report hazards, incidents and near misses without delay.
Management Responsibilities
The management team is responsible for implementing this Health and Safety policy and ensuring that:
Comprehensive risk assessments are carried out for our core activities, including packing, lifting and carrying, use of equipment, driving and working in customers homes or business premises. Safe working procedures are developed and communicated to all relevant staff. Suitable equipment, such as trolleys, lifting aids, protective gloves and other personal protective equipment, is provided and maintained in good condition. Vehicles used for removals are roadworthy, regularly inspected and maintained, and loaded safely in accordance with legal weight limits. New staff receive appropriate health and safety induction and role-specific training, and refresher training is provided when necessary. Accidents, near misses and customer property damage are recorded, investigated and used to improve our safety performance.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees and contractors working for Removals Elephant and Castle are required to:
Follow all safety instructions, training and procedures relevant to removals work. Use the provided equipment and lifting aids correctly and never misuse tools or vehicles. Avoid taking unnecessary risks, especially when lifting heavy or awkward items, working on stairs or in confined spaces. Wear appropriate clothing and protective equipment as directed. Immediately report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, accidents or near misses to their supervisor. Cooperate fully with investigations and any actions taken to prevent a recurrence.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before each move, our team will assess the work environment, including access routes, staircases, lifts, parking arrangements and any specific risks within the property. Where required, a more detailed pre-move survey will be undertaken to identify potential hazards and plan the safest approach.
We place particular emphasis on:
Manual handling: using team lifting techniques, trolleys and other aids wherever possible, and avoiding unsafe single-person lifts. Working at height: exercising care when using ramps, vehicle steps and loading platforms, and avoiding standing on furniture or unstable surfaces. Protection of property: using appropriate covers, pads and floor protection to reduce the risk of damage and trips. Secure loading: arranging and securing items in vehicles to prevent movement during transit, and checking weight distribution.
Vehicle Safety and Driving Standards
Drivers representing Removals Elephant and Castle must hold the appropriate licence and follow all road traffic laws. They are required to carry out basic pre-use checks on vehicles and report any defects promptly.
Safe driving behaviour is expected at all times, including adherence to speed limits, safe parking and consideration for other road users and local communities. Drivers must not operate vehicles under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any medication that may impair their ability to drive safely.
Customer, Public and Property Protection
Our crews will take reasonable steps to protect customers, visitors and the public from hazards associated with removals activity. This may include controlling access to work areas, careful positioning of ramps and equipment, and maintaining clear walkways.
We will handle customers belongings with care, using appropriate techniques and equipment to reduce the risk of damage and injury. Any incidents affecting customer property or safety will be addressed promptly and recorded for review.
Training, Communication and Consultation
Removals Elephant and Castle will provide ongoing training in manual handling, safe use of equipment, vehicle safety and general health and safety awareness. Information on specific risks and control measures will be communicated clearly before work begins.
We encourage open communication and consultation on health and safety matters. Employees are invited to raise concerns, suggest improvements and participate in developing safer methods of working.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
We are committed to continually improving our health and safety performance. To support this, we will monitor working practices, review incident reports and assess feedback from staff and customers.
This Health and Safety policy will be reviewed regularly, and revised when necessary, to ensure it remains effective, up to date and appropriate for the nature and scale of the removals services provided by Removals Elephant and Castle.
All staff and contractors are required to familiarise themselves with this policy and to apply its principles during every move, from local home relocations to larger commercial removals within our service area.
